1:1 or 20:1: What Separates Two CBD Seed Packs

Put two packs of CBD seeds beside each other, one marked 1:1 and the other 20:1, and the two look identical: the same breeder’s foil, same seed count, seeds that no eye can tell apart. Grow them in the same tent and they part ways from the very first step and do not converge again. The reason is a single gene, and the easiest way to understand what it does is to follow the two packs through every stage they share: the breeding that produced them, the seed, the seedling, the flowering tent, the harvest, the jar, the lab report and the border. The ratios used as examples below are taken from the range at https://calmcbdseeds.com, and that range runs 1:1, 2:1 and 20:1 and a top line at about 30 to one; the genetics holds the same whichever shop the seeds came from.

Stage One: At the Breeder’s Bench

Cannabis decides whether it will make THC or CBD at one position on the genome. The gene there exists in two forms: one builds the enzyme that turns the shared precursor into THCA, the other the enzyme that turns it into CBDA. Every plant carries two copies, one inherited from each parent, and the pair sets the chemotype. Two THC copies make a THC-dominant plant. Two CBD copies give a CBD-dominant one. One of each makes a balanced plant, since the two forms are codominant and not one of them overrides the other.

The 1:1 pack was made by pairing two balanced plants, both carrying one copy of each form. The 20:1 pack was bred by pairing two plants that each carry two CBD copies and not a single THC copy in either of them. This one fact at the bench decides everything afterwards, and it is already inside the seed long before it is put in the foil.

Stage Two: Inside the Seed

Cross two balanced plants and the seeds fall out by the simplest rule in genetics: a quarter get two THC copies, a quarter get two CBD copies, half get one of each. In a pack of 10 seeds that means, on average, around two THC-dominant seeds, two or three CBD-dominant seeds, and about five true balanced seeds. The pack is labelled by its parents, and for half its seeds the label is accurate; in the case of the other half it is a description of something else. Calm CBD Seeds states the expected split on every balanced pack, so the buyer knows before planting that a share of the plants are going to differ from the stated ratio.

The 20:1 pack has no such spread. Each seed received a CBD copy from both parent, every plant will be CBD-dominant, and the ratio on the foil holds to every one of them, within the ordinary differences in the amount of much total cannabinoid any individual plant produces. Breeders say such lines “breed true” for chemotype; the phrase refers to precisely this absence of variation.

Stage Three: The Seedling Tray

At this stage the two packs appear the same once more, and the likeness lasts further than many growers assume. Chemotype leaves no trace on a seedling. Leaf, vigour, internode spacing and the speed of growth rate are governed by other genes entirely, and the different kinds of plant in the 1:1 pack come up without any visible difference from one another and from every plant in the 20:1 pack.

The one real distinction during this stage comes from ancestry not chemotype. Lines with strong hemp genetics, which includes some older CBD-dominant lines, are inclined to grow taller and fill out less. A well-worked 20:1 strain grows like a normal indoor hybrid; a young one still shows the field in its shape. Not one of these habit says anything about the ratio to come.

Stage Four: The Flowering Room

In flower the two packs start to offer hints, and most of them mislead. Trichome density is the first one a grower reads, and it used to be a reasonable guide: early CBD-dominant strains showed visibly less frost than their THC counterparts, an unwanted inheritance from hemp. Modern selections have mostly erased that gap, and a lightly resinous plant from the 20:1 pack can still test exactly where the foil said. Resin density and chemotype are carried on separate genes.

Smell is worse. The terpene profile lives on still different genes, so the THC-dominant plant sitting in the 1:1 pack can be identical to the balanced one next to it, and both can be identical to a plant from the 20:1 pack. People who attempt to separate a balanced pack by nose in week eight are right about half the time, and that is not better than not unsorted at all.

How Late Is Too Late

Here the two packs differ in a way that favours the grower of the 20:1 pack and also the CBD-dominant plants sitting in the 1:1 pack. CBDA degrades rather slowly than THCA, so a CBD-dominant plant allowed a week beyond its ideal point retains most of its cannabinoid content, where a THC-dominant one in the same conditions has by then begun converting THC into CBN. The usual trichome rules still holds; it applies on account of the terpenes, which fade on any plant regardless the chemotype, and a late, rushed CBD flower tastes of very little however good the lab number is.

Why Each Plant Gets Its Own Label

The 20:1 pack can go into one jar. Each plant in it carries about the same ratio, and mixing them changes nothing worth measuring. The 1:1 pack should never be handled the same way. Blend its 10 plants into a single jar and the contents is a ratio that no foil ever predicted, skewed by whichever plants grew biggest, and nothing on a later test can untangle what went in.

The habit that saves the trouble is dull: cut the balanced pack plant by plant, cure every one separately, number them, and try each one one at a time rather than after anything is combined. It is the one stage in the whole grow where the different chemotypes of plant in the 1:1 pack can yet be kept apart short of a lab, and then only for the reason that every one is at that moment in its own bag.

What a Certificate Shows

Submit a few grams from each jar to a laboratory and the two packs finally are readable. For the 20:1 pack the reports arrive back grouped tightly near the advertised ratio, differing mostly in total cannabinoid content rather than in proportion. For the 1:1 pack they arrive back in three groups: some plants showing almost all THC, some showing almost all CBD, and the rest sitting around one to one. Nothing of that pattern is a defect; it is the breeder’s cross expressed as numbers.

Over-the-counter test kits exist for growers who cannot reach a lab, and most detect whether THC is there rather than how much. That is sufficient to separate the THC-dominant plants away from a balanced pack and insufficient to put a ratio to the others, which matches the commonest use: knowing which of the 10 jars is going to catch out a guest.

Stage Eight: The Border

The last stage where the two packs separate is in law, and it trips growers who thought “CBD” meant “hemp”. The majority of jurisdictions classify hemp by a THC ceiling, a small fraction of a percent of dry weight, and the exact figure varying by country and year to year. A plant from the 20:1 pack producing twenty percent CBD at twenty to one at the same time makes about one percent THC, and that is several times over the majority of thresholds. Compliant lines are bred to keep total cannabinoid output low so the THC share remains below the line at maturity; CBD seed lines are bred for high output and let the THC scale with it. A seller that offers only a ratio is describing a flower line; anyone who needs a compliant crop should look for a tested THC figure at harvest and order no line that does not provide one.

Beyond the threshold issue, the chemotype alters nothing about the law on the seed as such. In places where owning cannabis seeds is lawful and germinating them is not, the 1:1 pack and the 20:1 pack sit in the same position as every other pack. Where the plant is permitted without restriction, the decision between them is a matter of preference and nobody else’s. No part of this article is legal advice, and the rule which applies is the one in the place the seed is going to be sown, rather than the one where it was sold.
